US states with the most data science college/university degree programs
Creating the Awesome Data Science Colleges List has opened the data for some analysis. The above chart shows the states with the most data science programs based upon the total number of colleges in the state (dark red is best, followed by orange, followed by yellow, and finally black is for states with no data science programs).
The Top States
- Washington D.C.
- Colorado
- Massachusetts
- South Dakota
- Nebraska
- Indiana
- New Hampshire
- Maryland
- Illinois
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Michigan
- Arkansas
The States Needing to Create Data Science Programs
- Alaska
- Delaware
- Hawaii
- Idaho
- Kansas
- Maine
- Mississippi
- North Dakota

Looks like there is this also http://datasciencedegree.wisconsin.edu/
A few notes. Instead of quantity, you should do some quality metrics as well. E.g. look at the school or college that the degree resides in for each university; compile rankings for that college and then do a weighted evaluation of each degree. The assumption is that a highly ranked computer science data-science program might be somewhat better than a lower ranked CS program. The other thing is that not all DS programs reside in the CS program, some are in business, some are in mathematics, some in health/biology, etc.
Also, provide a key for for the map; you state “(dark red is better, black is bad)” but what about orange and yellow? 🙂 If this is a heat map (which I assume it is), just post the key as well so we can see the degrees, as I would assume that black is only marginally worse than dark red with yellow being the worst.
Yellow being the best, rather. (see how confused I get? 😉
Chester,
That is my mistake. I definitely should have included a key.
Here is what the colors represent:
dark red is best, followed by orange, followed by yellow, and finally black is for states with no data science programs
If I get some time this weekend, I will put a key on the map.
Thanks for this catch,
Ryan
Chester,
These are some great comments. Here is my difficulty with quality. Most of the programs are not old enough to have quality rankings. A ranking of the programs on the list would be very beneficial. That said, colleges have overall rankings and those could be used. Anyhow, quality would be a great idea, but I just did not choose to use it.
Thanks,
Ryan
